Who Are They
Fronted by Season Five American Idol finalist, Chris Daughtry, this band exploded onto the music scene in 2006 with their multi-platinum, self-titled debut album. Since then, they have become staples on Top 40 and Rock radio, as well as on the touring circuit. They have won multiple Billboard and American Music Awards, all while maintaining strong family lives and churning out hits like "It's Not Over" and "Home".
What Are Their Messages
Daughtry's songs are positive, personal rock songs and power ballads that often affirm the ideals of family, hope and remaining strong through trials. Their smash, "Home", even got lots of airplay on Christian radio. While stylistically similar to bands such as Nickelback or 3 Doors Down, they have largely avoided writing songs with similar themes. Their most recent single, "Waiting For Superman" explores people who are lost and searching for a savior.
What Does a Youthworker Need2Know
In a genre often loaded with moral ambiguity, misogyny and rebellion, Daughtry provide a positive alternative, while still remaining solid musically. Any students who grew up watching American Idol will be especially familiar with him, as his was the most watched season in the history of the show. He and his band have remained steadfast, even when met with levels of success that often derail others. They are not, however, outright religious. Daughtry says, "I'm not out to force my political or religious beliefs on anyone. If I can influence people, I hope it's to follow their own hearts."
