Not many bands could play a rousing live show and then hand out pointers on contracting and home construction. Echoing Angels knows such ins and outs though, as band members maintain full-time jobs in the field (along with one professional golf instructor) while also managing a full touring schedule and recording. “When we started, we didn’t do it with the intent of getting a record deal,” singer Chris Peevy says. “We did this on the principle of serving Jesus. We view our ministry as if we are Sunday School teachers.”
We asked Chris to write some thoughts concerning “You Alone” – the title song of the band’s album. Here’s what he wrote…
Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Every time I read that verse, I think of my childhood. I remember the innocence that I had while growing up. With every year and every step came more responsibility. Now, as I approach the age of thirty, I am reminded of God’s Word and His promise that if we change our minds and our hearts, then we will enjoy the happiness of His perfect will for our lives.
As followers of Christ we are called to be set apart from the pattern of this world. However, since we are also slaves to sin we fall short of what God wants for us. We need His forgiveness. God alone, in the form of the Holy Spirit, elicits this change within our hearts.
When we sing worship songs we sing about what God can do and about what He has already done in our lives. Sometimes I am confused, and I question the direction of my path. That is when I hear God (not in a great audible voice) say, “It’s alright. It’s okay.”
As a musician in a world that is so complicated, I feel that the simplest songs seem to speak the loudest. “You Alone” is a simple message and a reminder of God’s availability. The song is about praising God and saying, “You are worthy. Through what You have done and brought us through, we’ll worship You.”
