Theme(s): Power
Objective
Students will see that we are not to live in fear and lack of courage. We forget this sometimes because of the devil telling us lies and saying that we are weak and powerless. However, we have the power of God that allows us to live for Christ on a daily basis and overcome the devil and his lies.
Warm Up
Super Hero Mania - Create in advance a list of super heroes (concentrate on those who have super powers, example: Superman, Hulk, etc.) Have your students turn their Student Guide over and write down as many super heroes they can name within a 90 second time period. After the 90 seconds, pull out your list and start naming off the names. If any of the students have the same name then have them cross them off the list. Then have students name the names on the list if any other student has that name, and then both students cross the name off their list. The idea is to see which student has the most names left with a process of elimination. The winner is the one with the most names on their list left and then present them with a super hero prize. In case of a tie, have students pick a number between 1-10.
Now, take a few minutes to have the students answer the questions in the Warm Up section of the Student Guide. After a few minutes discuss them with the group.
• What is one super hero from your list that you like personally? Why?
• What kind of power does that super hero possess?
• Was there ever a time you "dressed up" and played super hero? How did it make you feel that you might possess those same powers as a kid?
• What would these super heroes look like if they had no power? Would you still want to play super hero as a kid?
Transition
The video we will watch is going to show (and say to) us how we have the power to make the devil run from our lives. Don't just watch the video - pay close attention to the lyrics. There is one particular area in the video/song that encourages us that we have power. See if you can hear it.
The Video
As you watch the video, encourage students to look for imagery that stands out to them. They'll write down some of the things they saw, and heard, in The Video section of their Student Guide.
Transition
Discuss briefly what the students saw, heard, and wrote down. Then transition to The Bible Study section.
Bible Study
Encourage students to take notes of what God's teaching them in this session in The Bible Study section of their Student Guide.
Have the students look up 2 Timothy 1:7 in their Bibles. Have a volunteer read the passage out loud to the rest of the group and then discuss: What are some fears you have? How have you let the devil into your life through these fears? When was it for you when you stopped believing you had power?
Say something like, we are not given a spirit of fear or lack of courage but we are given one of POWER! Where do you think this power comes from?
Have different students look up these passages and read them aloud to the group - Acts 1:8; Ephesians 1:19-21; Ephesians 3:20; Luke 9:1; Matthew 28:19; Colossians 2:13-15; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22. Then discuss what these verses say about power, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit. (Let the students work through them, they'll be better for it!)
Say, "As we think about the video we watched (Run Devil Run), let us not forget the devil is real and 1 Peter 5:8 says to be alert. Why?" (Read the verse and wait for responses.) Answer, because the devil is trying to destroy us.
Some Things to Consider: (Elaborate on each point-remember, this is not a sermon but a discussion.)
• We don't have to live in fear, lack courage, or be intimated.
• We can't be passive. We must exercise this power in order to live a triumphant life making the devil run.
• We can do all of this because of the power we have in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The same power that raised Jesus Christ from death is in you.
Wrap Up
• Ask: How can we stay grounded to the power? Have a student read Hebrews 12:1-2
o Share this made-up word with students THROWRUNFIX. Have the students repeat the word a few times getting louder. Then say, "THROW off the sin (stuff) that so easily entangles - RUN the race that God has marked out for us - FIX your eyes on Jesus. If you could do this daily, YOU WILL MAKE THE DEVIL RUN!"
