Discussion
“Perfect” is a beautiful love song. Ed wrote the song about his girlfriend. While the song is beautifully written and Sheeran’s soulful voice sounds classic, there may be some messages in the song that are inaccurate and even inappropriate for young listeners.
For example, the song can give the impression that love is all we need; that finding the “right one” is the key to a happy and fulfilling life. The song seems to place having a romantic relationship as the most important relationship there is.
However, there may also be a positive message of love in this song. God created us as relational beings. Romantic relationships are very much a part of His creation. (Genesis 2:18) As long as these relationships are handled in an appropriate manner, they can be healthy and demonstrate a positive message to teenagers and to the rest of society.
Read 1 John 2:15-17 and 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 to have a better understand- ing of what the world teaches about love and loving things of the world.
The world places a high importance on romantic love and teaches us that romantic love is the pentacle of all relationships. Yet, Colossians 3:2, Romans 12:9-10, and 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 give the truth of what God says about that idea.
Conclusion
Our culture highlights romantic relationships and places an unrealistic expecta- tion on those relationships. Love and romantic relationships are a part of God’s plan as long as they are lived out within the boundaries that God has set.
