Objective
Students will be reminded that they must continue to have faith no matter the circumstances.
Warm Up
Figure It Out – You will need about twenty random items, such as, plastic army man, rubber ball, dice, penny, shark tooth, paper clip, marble, etc. Fill 2-3 brown paper bags with around 7-10 knick-knack items. Ask for a few students to volunteer. Blindfold them and have them reach into their bag to find an item and tell the group what it is based solely on the way it feels and what picture they form in their head.
Transition
Ask the students what object was difficult and what was easy to determine? Why? Say something like, “We interpret the world around us by how we see it, feel it, and experience it through each of our senses. However, we can struggle with things that our senses can’t always interpret. When we are faced with questions or experiences that we don’t fully understand, we must grow in our faith. Jordan Feliz’ song called ‘Faith’ talks about how we must hold on to our faith even when circumstances seem dire.”
The Song
Play the song, and then go over the students’ responses to the Lyrics section.
Bible Study
Read the following verses, and go over the questions and answers in the students’ Faith section of their guide.
Hebrews 11:1-3; 2 Corinthians 5:7; Matthew 17:20
- What does faith mean to you?
- What does living by faith and not by sight mean to you?
- According to Matthew 17:20, does faith have limits?
Say something like, “Jordan’s ‘Faith’ song states that ‘you have to believe it before you see it.’ An interesting background story about Jordan, and why the song seems to focus on his upbringing, to becoming a musician, to having a family, is that he and his wife did not have the money to make a trip to Nashville (where they felt God was leading them). After a lot of prayer, they stepped out in faith, relying on the Lord to provide AS they went from city to city. The Lord provided and Jordan and his family made it to Nashville where Jordan’s career flourished. Stepping out into the unknown can be scary, but when we practice faith we’re showing the Lord we trust Him more than the doubt that can creep in. Let’s take a look at why acting on faith is important.
Hebrews 11:6; Matthew 14:28-31; Proverbs 3:5
- What do faith and trust have in common?
- Why is it difficult to have faith when the storms of life get rough?
- Why can’t we trust our own understanding when facing certain situations?
Think of someone with whom you’re really close. Would your feelings be hurt to know he/she didn’t trust you? Now think how you’d feel if the person you’re close with told you they trusted you 100%? Which pleases you more? God wants us to trust Him even when we don’t fully understand the situations we face or the circumstances surrounding them. Jordan’s lyrics say that we need to remember that our rescuer is walking beside us. Just as Jesus helped Peter when he began to sink because of his doubt, Jesus is there for us when we do the same. The goal is to be strong in our faith to where we can be called out to the waters, and trust that God will continue to provide all we need.
Wrap Up
Say something like, “Faith isn’t something that comes easily. It takes growth, prayer, accountability, and time. When we face situations that seem to leave us no way out, we must keep trusting that the Lord is working for our good.” Have students complete their Mustard Seeds section on their handout. End in prayer.
