Leader Guide

Artist: Brinson
Album: Thornz
Label: GodChaserz Entertainment
Song: White Gold
From: MVL 99
Writer: Darrell Williams | First Christian Community | Annapolis, Maryland

Objective
By the end of this session, your students will know that God has called everyone to live for Him. They should know that regardless of trends of society, they must make a decision to serve God or the world. God is looking for students who will take a stand for Him. (Daniel 3:8-20; Revelation 3:14-20)

Warm Up
Encourage your group to think of examples from movies of someone who had to make a choice between what was right and what was popular. Try to get your youth to think about what they would do if they were in a similar situation.

Transition
Explain that we would all like to be popular. The choices we make in our attempt to be popular include what we wear, what we listen to, where we go, whom we hang with, what we do – and on and on. There are some situations when we must choose between being popular and being right. Those sometimes are the hardest situations to experience.

The Video
Play the video of “White Gold” by Brinson. (The song features Marz Ferrer.) Discuss what your students saw and heard that relate to the topic of choosing to do what is right rather than what is popular. Brinson himself walks through the lyrics in this video: https://youtu.be/MPpgHhdxRFc

Transition
This video is about a Christian rapper who is willing to go against the norms of society and be a witness for Jesus. There are few popular stories about young people who do things that go against society. Ask the group if they can think of a young person in the news, a movie, or from their neighborhood who did something counter to the ills of society. Have them explain.

Bible Study
Familiarize yourself with Daniel 3:8-20 and Revelation 3:14-20 so that you can summarize them by heart for your group. It’s important to draw out in the discussion how God has called everyone to take a stand and to live for Him. Hand out the Student Guides. Have the group take turns reading Daniel 3:8-20. Discuss:
  • How do you think non-Christians feel about Christian students who only listen to Christian Rap music?
  • How do you think people would react if the most popular secular rap artist got saved and only did Christian Rap music?
  • Do you think it’s a big deal if some Christian listens to songs with explicit lyrics, especially since Christians are already going to heaven? Explain.
  • Do you think that a person is helping a rapper sin by supporting and requesting music with explicit lyrics? Explain.
  • Give an example how you could use Christian Rap music to witness to a friend who loves secular rap.
  • Have you ever had to take a stand similar to what Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did in Daniel 3?
  • What can you learn from Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego’s decision to live holy in an unholy society?
Wrap Up
Our experience sometimes shows that we don’t receive any rewards for doing what’s right instead of what’s popular. Some would say that because of your decision for God you would never be as popular as those who do what everyone else is doing. But because of your stand you can accomplish all that God has in store for you! God rewards those who diligently seek Him, and He does great things for anyone who is willing to take a stand for Him. Have a student read and summarize Revelation 3:14-20. Close with a prayer that thanks God for reminding us that if we are willing to stand for Him, He will protect us even in the fire.
