Artist: Remedy Drive
Album: The North Star
Song: Sunlight On Her Face
From: MVL 99
Writer: Keith Jones | First Baptist Church | Centralia, Missouri

Theme(s): Social Action

Objective
Unfortunately, slavery still exists today, all over the globe, even in the United States. If we are to truly believe that we were all created in God’s image, then we are called to do what we can to fight social injustice and spread the message of hope, peace, and God’s love to everyone on the planet.

Warm Up
There is a video of Remedy Drive’s lead singer David Zach talking about his involvement with the organization called Exodus Road – how he joined them to free young girls who were trafficked, and how Remedy Drive came to write the song “Sunlight On Her Face.” The link to the video is: https://youtu.be/4TEOCN8Jzyc

Transition
Ask your students what they know about the trafficking business. Look up different organizations that combat trafficking, like: A21, Exodus Road, and The End It Movement. Then ask the students what “freedom” means to them and what things do we take for granted thanks to those freedoms. Have them list those things under the section titled Freedom.

The Video
Print out the lyrics for this video and give them to the students. As they watch the video, have them underline all the things that stick out to them. Then, have them circle everything that has been taken away from these girls who have been trafficked.

Transition
As you transition to the study, talk with your students about why they think the band focuses on the girls wanting to feel sunlight on their face.

Bible Study
Read each passage or verse with your students and have them answer the questions in the space titled Taken!

Galatians 3:27-29
In Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he spends the majority of chapter three discussing justification though faith in Jesus Christ. He closes the third chapter with an unmistakable point that all who know Christ as Lord are Heirs to His Kingdom.
  • Who does this passage say are heirs to the promises of Christ?
  • Why do you think the world has a hard time seeing this?
  • What can believers do to change that culture?
Luke 10:25-37
This is the famous passage of the Good Samaritan. With this passage, emphasize not just the deed, but also highlight the fact that ethnicity didn’t matter to the Samaritan.
  • What makes this story so special?
  • How do the first two travelers relate to people today?
  • Why was it such a big deal for a Samaritan to do this?
  • What does this show you about your world today and the need for action?
Genesis 1:26-27
  • What does being created “in God’s image” mean?
  • What responsibility comes with that fact?
  • Are the girls who are trafficked made in His image?
  • What do these two verses mean today for social injustice?
Wrap Up
Action is one of the greatest displays of God’s love for people. Words are good, prayer is better, but what more can you do to bring awareness, aid, and relief to those who experience social injustice whether that is trafficking, racism, or any other injustice? As a group what can you do? Make a plan and then enact it.
