Objective
Your group will understand that God delights in them – and they, as His creation, are able to proclaim His greatness.
Warm Up
Show and Tell – Have your students prepare a week in advance to bring one of their personal belongings that “defines” who they are. If you don’t have the week to prepare or you are looking at this lesson on the day you are supposed to teach it, then have them either draw the thing they would share or use the Internet to bring up a picture of their item. Regardless, have each student share why his or her item helps to identify him or her and what is important about that item.
Transition
Say, “Your item could be said to define who you are – to help you to better understand who you are. The same could be said about you and God. You are a creation of His that brings Him delight. YOU are His defining item. Watch this video and see what it has to say about how God can be known.”
The Video
Hand out the Student Guides.
Play the video and have the students fill in the missing lyrics as they listen. Here are the missing words: wonder, live, give, enough, thinks, joy, light, crimson, stains, reason, stand, insecure, blended
Transition
Say, “The lyric says, What I didn’t understand is You love me as I am. Let’s take a look at a few different verses that make a similar claim – that God not only created us and claims us as His own, but that He also delights in us as His creation.”
Bible Study
Have students read the following and respond on their Student Guides. When students have completed each section, let them discuss their responses.
Genesis 1
- Make a list of what God says was good.
- Locate the one thing God thought was very good.
- Why do you think all of creation was good, but only humankind was “very good”?
- What makes humankind different from the rest of creation?
- Re-read Genesis 1:27. What does being not only a creation of God, but a “very good” creation of His mean to you?
Romans 1:20
- What are some ways that you see God in creation – including yourself?
- What does the verse mean when it says that people are “without excuse”?
- What kinds of things do you sign? (Have them make a list on their worksheet)
- What significance is there when you put your signature on something?
- What is meaningful about the idea that you are God’s signature?
- What does being the signature of God mean for how you should act?
Wrap Up
Have the students write a letter from God to themselves. What would He say to them? Is He proud of them? Does He want to change them? Is it just casual conversation? Finish by saying, “We are God’s creation, and were created to glorify and worship God. Remember that you are God’s creation and have His signature all over you.” Close in prayer.
