Album: The Kipper Gray Sessions
Label: Centricity
Song: Be Your Own Kind Of Beautiful
From: MVL 102
Writer: Todd Pearage | Standing Stone Ministry | Pottstown, Pennsylvania

Objective
Students will discover that being who God created them to be is the best way to live.

Warm Up
Name That Candy Bar – You have two ways you can play this game:
  • Option One: Go buy several well-known candy bars and remove them from the wrapper. Then invite several students to volunteer. Blindfold each student and feed them each a different candy bar (obviously make sure they do not have any allergies). See if they can identify the candy bar.
  • Option Two: Buy “Name that Candy Bar” from Download Youth Ministry and play the digital version.
Transition
Disucss:
  • How easy or difficult was it for you to identify each candy bar? Why?
  • What makes each candy bar unique? (The answer you are looking for is the ingredients are what makes Candy bars different.)
The Video
Say, “Just as the things inside candy bars make them different, we are all different and unique. We are going to watch a music video that says just that. Let’s check out this brand-new video by Jason Gray.” Play the video.

Transition
Ask, “What did you guys think of that video?”

Bible Study
Have everyone tell the group what candy bar is their favorite. Then ask, “Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘He marched to a beat of a different drum?’ Has anyone ever said that about you? Why would someone say that about you or someone else?"

Say, “Obviously, there are some good reasons someone would say that, and sometimes there are some not-so-good reasons someone would say that. Let’s take a minute to see what God has to say about you being made to be uniquely you.”

Read Jeremiah 1:5 aloud to the group. Discuss:
  • What do you think this verse means?
  • How do you think that effected Jeremiah’s life?
  • What if God sent you a message that said, “________(student’s name), I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my messenger to the nations”? How would you respond?
Read Ephesians 2:10 to the group. Discuss:
  • Did you know you are a masterpiece in God’s eyes?
  • Did you know that you were created to do good things?
  • What do you think some of those things might be?
In the lyrics, Jason says, “Child you will change the whole world, just by being who you are.” How can we help each other do the things God created us to do?

Wrap Up
Jason challenges us to “be your own kind of beautiful.” As we close, let’s take a minute or two to write down some ways we can be our own kind of beautiful.

My hope tonight is that you understand that you are unique and designed by the God of the universe. He loves you! And he wants you to Be Your Own Kind Of Beautiful.
