Objective
At the end of this lesson, your students will have discussed what it means to have healthy relationships (romantic, friendships, etc.) and what it means to find their identity in Christ by studying Romans 8:12-17.

Warm Up
The Mafia Game – If you’re unfamiliar with the game, this website has great instructions (though we won’t be following the themes of the lesson laid out on this site – just the game instructions).

Transition
Discuss:
  • What was difficult about not knowing who you can trust?
  • How important was it for you to know your own identity in this game?
After these questions, say something along the lines of, “Today we’re going to watch a music video from PEABOD that talks about relationships, trust, and identity.”

Play the official “Hoodie” music video. Have the students write down some things they notice about the relationship I’m singing about.

Transition
Start by asking the students what they wrote down. Their answers may lead into the following questions, but if not, ask these two questions:
  • What do you think makes for a healthy relationship? (could be any kind of relationship)
  • What makes for an unhealthy relationship?
Bible Study
Explain that in any relationship, whether that’s with your parents, your friends, a girlfriend or boyfriend, trust and identity are two incredibly important qualities to consider – especially identity. If you don’t know who you are, your interactions with other people can feel confusing, difficult, and you will likely feel like making decisions and choices on your own is hard. If you didn’t know who you were when we were playing Mafia, how would you have felt? (Or – if you didn’t know if you were supposed to fall or catch during the trust fall exercise, how would you have felt?) Thankfully, if you have put your faith in Jesus, the Bible tells us exactly where our identity lies.

At this point, read Romans 8:12-17. Discuss:
  • What does this passage say about our identity?
  • What does it say about fear?
  • What are some examples of ways you might live according to the world?
  • How does our identity in Christ affect how we live our lives?
Our relationship with God is one that is built on identity and trust. God tells us all about who He is throughout the Bible, and He tells us who we are too – His children, deeply loved by Him. He also asks us to trust Him, even when we don’t know how He’s working.

Wrap Up
Now you might be thinking. “Trust is hard. People aren’t perfect, and sometimes I forget who I am.” And that is exactly why trusting God is so important – God is perfect, and He’s always good. So, we know that we can trust Him completely. We also know that our truest identity is found in Jesus. We can always turn back to Him so that He can remind us that we are His children.

End with a prayer that as the students go into the rest of their week, that they would remember who they are in Christ and that our God is completely trustworthy.
