Objective
To help students understand that God has a larger purpose for our lives and to look to Him when we feel like we can’t go on
Warm Up
Super Stunt Challenge – Prepare ahead of time by having 2-3 boxes with a variety of craft supplies (tape, construction paper, pipe cleaners, etc.) and a toy car (Hot Wheels, Matchbox, etc.). If you can get your hands on one, a piece of car track would be excellent. Each box should contain basically the same items. Have the boxes closed and on separate tables or desks when students arrive. When you start the group, announce that you’re going to have a “Super Stunt Challenge”! Select teams of two to compete. Really build up the event without letting the teams look in the box. (Say things like: this is going to take teams who are really brave! It’s going to require a steady hand and nerves of steel! etc.) Explain that the boxes contain everything they need for the stunt challenge. Have students guess what they think might be in the box.
When you have them sufficiently ready, have teams open their boxes. Give them a minute to try and figure it out. Explain that they are going to use the toy car inside and the craft supplies to build a ramp for the cat to jump. They can create a hoop to go through, paper sharks to fly over, anything they can come up with in 10 minutes for the most epic stunt they can. The students that are left will be the judges. The only rule is that the car must end up on it wheels. Start the timer and have the rest of the class cheer for their favorites. Discuss what epic stunts they’ve ever witnessed and how the teams can add to their creations. When the time is up, have each team perform their stunts and have the group vote for the winner. Have a prize ready for the winning team.
Transition
Ask the group which stunt they think would actually work in real life? Ask what does it take for someone to become a stunt person? (Perseverance is the key.)
Tell the group that they’re going to watch the latest video from the band Unspoken and it’s not like most music videos. It begins with a few stunts. Point out the warning as the video begins, “Stunts were performed under professional supervision - do not attempt.”
Play the video.
Transition
As the video ends, pass out the Student Guides, and tell the group that Unspoken’s lead singer Chad Mattson is the father in the video and his real daughter, Romy, is the girl. Explain that Romy didn’t do all of the stunts in the video and she was actually disappointed that they wouldn’t let her do them all! When everyone has a sheet, discuss the questions in the left column: What did the girl in the video (Romy) want to do? Why did she throw away her helmet? When have you felt like Romy? How did her father (Chad) help her?
Ask how does this story remind us of God and His children?
Bible Study
This Bible study is arranged according to the chorus of the video: When you feel like giving up; When you feel like giving in; His Love is the Reason; Just keep on believing. You can have students team up or individually read the verses and answer the questions:
- Isaiah 41:10 – According to this verse, why shouldn’t we give up? How does the verse give us help?
- Galatians 6:9 – According to this verse, why shouldn’t we give up? How does the verse give us help?
- 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 – According to this passage how is His love the reason? How does that encourage us?
- John 20:30-31 – According to this passage where does belief come from? How can that help when we struggle with fear or doubt?
When everyone is done responding, chose a person to read each verse. Discuss the answer to each question as a group. Pay special attention to those who may be going through difficulties. Encourage them that Perseverance is the key!
Wrap Up
Have students think of someone who needs to hear this message. Tell them to share the name of the person with the group. If they don’t feel comfortable saying the person’s name just let them say “Unspoken.” Brainstorm plans that students can take this week to bring encouragement to those who “feel like giving up.” Close by praying for each person mentioned and the “unspoken” ones as well.
