Warm Up
Would You Rather – Have your group move to one side of the room or the other in answer to the questions. When they’ve settled down on either side, ask a volunteer to explain why he or she chose that side. (Many “would you rather” questions can be found on the internet. Here are some you could use)
  • Would you rather have three feet, or three hands?
  • Would you rather have all your shirts be two sizes too big, or have all of them be one size too small?
  • Would you rather lose your sense of taste, or your sense of smell?
  • Would you rather only be able to whisper, or only be able to shout?
  • Would you rather be able to freeze time, or travel through time?
  • Would you rather live without music, or without television?
  • Would you rather have your dream job, or find your true love?
  • Would you rather wrestle a bear, or an alligator?
  • Would you rather be super talented, or super strong?
  • Would you rather be better at a musical instrument, or better at a sport?

Transition
“The Little Drummer Boy” is a fable, a story of a poor boy who couldn’t afford a gift for the newborn Christ Child, so he played his drum at the manger with Mary’s approval. The baby smiled, delighted with the Little Drummer Boy’s skillful playing. The song was written by Katherine Kennicot Davis in 1941, and has become a favorite song at Christmas.

A lot of Christ followers think that they don’t have much to offer the Lord. You may think, “I don’t have a lot of money,” or “I don’t sing or play an instrument,” or that you have no talents to use for the Lord, but that’s not the case. Listen to this verse: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10 NIV) God has given you very unique abilities, talents, and gifts. Those things make you who you are and make you different from other people.

As Pastor Rick Warren says, “God gave you talents to benefit others, not yourself. And God gave other people talents that benefit you. We’re all a part of the body of Christ, and each part matters. There are no insignificant people in the family of God. Whether you are a musician or an accountant, a teacher or a cook, God gave you those abilities to serve others.”

Bible Study
1 Corinthians 12:12-31
  • Have you ever broken a bone? If so, which one?
  • Which of the five senses is most important?
  • What talent do you have that others in this group might not know about?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is it to you to… Fit in? Be popular? Be unique?
  • Describe yourself as a part of the body. (An eye, hand, foot, etc.).
  • Why did you select that part?
  • How connected are you to your local church body? How can you help the “body” function better?
  • If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you like to try to do as a group to advance the cause of Christ in your school or your community?
The drummer boy wanted to use his best ability for the King, so he played a drum. How could we live out these verses? What do you do right now that you can better use for God’s glory?

Wrap Up
When God made you, He made an investment in you, and He expects a return on that investment. Are you using what He’s given you for the benefit of others to make the world a better place? Or are you just using those talents to benefit yourself?

When God gives you a talent, He expects you to use it. A gift or talent is like a muscle, you have to use it or lose it. The more you use it, the better you will get with it, and God will bless you with more and more abilities as you use yours faithfully.
