Objective

Students will understand the importance of praising God and remaining faithful to Him even when times are tough. Your students will have discussed the ups and downs of life, and be equipped with a strategy to stay encouraged while journeying through them.

Warm Up
  • Have you ever had something you didn’t feel you were good at – but then, because of practice, endurance, or from getting someone’s help, you were able to achieve your goal?
  • Describe how it felt when you couldn’t accomplish your goal, how it felt while you were practicing, and how you felt when you accomplished your goal. Examples: stuck on a video game level, figuring how to do an algebra problem, improving your time running the mile, playing an instrument.
Transition
You could have a goal or dream that feels distant, or impossible, and that can be discouraging. But even if you feel stuck today, you can be confident that Christ is always faithful.

The Song
This song is a great reminder that no matter what we face, we can still praise the Lord. Play the song.

Transition
There’s a great story about the Apostle Paul going through a difficult time. He and his friend Silas had been arrested, and while they were in prison, they made a decision that turned their difficulty into victory.

Bible Study
Read Acts 16:25-34.
  • A prison seems an odd place to pray and sing hymns to God (v. 25). Why do you think Paul and Silas were able to praise God in these circumstances?
  • Describe a situation in your life where you should respond by praising God in spite of difficulties.
  • What were the immediate effects of the earthquake, and the other events that followed as a result of Paul and Silas’ decision to praise God? (vv. 26-34)?
  • How do the events of verses 26-30 illustrate what happens when we trust God?
  • What does this passage reveal about both the joys and the difficulties we might encounter in a life with God?
Wrap Up
When you are faced with difficulties, choose to persevere and stay encouraged by praising God, because you know that you are never abandoned, and that victory is on the other side of your faithfulness.
