Objective
Students will learn that God is God in good times and bad; He is always worthy of praise.
Warm Up
Who knows the Bible? – Let’s have a contest to see who can tell me the location of each of these verses. We’ll start with an easy one. Stand up if you know where to find it and can finish it.
- “For God so loved the world…” (John 3:16)
- “In the beginning God created…” (Genesis 1:1)
- “In the beginning was the Word…” (John 1:1)
- “Jesus wept.” (John 11:35)
Okay, so that last one was a curve ball because there is no rest of the verse!
Say, “We’re going to watch a muysic video by Citizen Way that lyrically mashes up two passages. As you listen to it, try to find the two passages.” Play the video.
Transition
What passages did this video use? (“The Lord’s Prayer” is found in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4, but the video includes components only found in Matthew’s version. It also pulls from Revelation 4:8-11.)
Bible Study
Revelation 4:8-11
- Who is holy according to the four creatures? (God)
- Who is almighty? (God)
- Who is worthy according to the twenty-four elders? (God)
- What is He worthy of? (receiving glory, honor, and power)
Jesus has conquered the grave, and Revelation reveals that He will triumph over all the demons and restore the earth to a perfect state when it is all over. He is holy. He is almighty. He is worthy.
“Holy” means to be dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose; sacred. “Almighty” means possessing unlimited power.
Matthew 6:9-13
- Whose name is to be respected? (God)
- Whose kingdom is it? Whose power? Whose glory? (God, God, and God)
Looking back at Revelation 4, notice that the creatures never stop saying that God is holy, almighty, and worthy. Neither do the elders. So, let’s look at the passage in which Jesus (God in the flesh) taught the apostles to pray. Verse 5, 6, and 7 all contain the phrase “When you pray” – then verse 9 says, “This is how you should pray…”
When you pray – whenever you pray – this is how you should pray: our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.
His name is “hallowed” not just when things are going good at home. His will is not just to be done when things are looking good for you. He doesn’t just have the power and glory when all is going your way at school. There is no limit to whenever you pray. Always having power, always being the ruler of the kingdom of heaven and earth speaks about His eternal sovereignty.
What does the word “sovereign” mean? Dictionary.com includes among its definitions “having supreme rank, power, and authority”, “supreme, preeminent, indisputable”, and “greatest in degree, utmost or extreme.”
Wrap Up
God is sovereign. He is sovereign every day. He is sovereign on good days and bad. So, no matter what kind of day you may be having, you can go to Him and ask Him for help. And, you can be confident that if you seek His will and live your life surrendered to doing what He says, His power will be present in your life. Praise Him in the good. Praise Him in the bad. Trust Him always. God is sovereign and God is good all the time!
