Objective
Help students acknowledge the miracle of salvation either by accepting Christ as Lord or proclaiming the miracle of salvation in their lives.
Warm Up
Create a Kahoot quiz at www.kahoot.it. Miracles from Scripture should form the basis of this quiz. The following are examples of miracle questions you can ask. (The questions are also included on the Student Guide if you prefer a written quiz.)
- Who dipped themselves in the river to be healed of leprosy?
- Who made an ax head float?
- What miracle did Jesus perform in Cana of Galilee?
- How many fish and loaves did Jesus use at the feeding of the 5000?
- What happened when Moses struck the rock in Exodus 17?
- At what pool did Jesus heal the invalid man in John 5?
- What words did Jesus say when He raised the little girl from the dead?
- Who did Paul raise from the dead after a tragic fall from a window?
- What were the two emotions felt by the disciples after Jesus calmed the storm?
After playing the Kahoot quiz, announce the winner and provide them with a prize.
Transition
Ask the students to discuss these questions:
- What is a miracle?
- What is the purpose of a miracle?
The Song
Introduce the Colton Dixon song “Miracles.” As the students listen, have them consider how Colton Dixon defines miracles.
Transition
Following the song, discuss their thoughts about it. Then introduce the miracle story from Luke 8:26-39 by explaining the following: In this story, Jesus and His disciples arrive in the region of the Gerasenes, the name of a people. They lived in an area on the east side of the Jordan River known as the Decapolis. Non-Jews primarily populated this area. This event is one of the few times when Jesus ministers among such people. As you study the passage, prayerfully consider what Jesus accomplished in the life of the man possessed by Legion.
Bible Study
- Why is this a miracle story?
- What miracle occurred in this story?
- What was the significance of the demon identifying Jesus as the “Son of the Most High God”?
- How did the miracle change the man?
- Why do you think the people might have been afraid when they saw the man in his right mind?
- Why didn’t Jesus allow the man to go with Him?
- What was the man’s response to the miracle in his life?
- When you observe this response, how does it inform you regarding how you should respond to the miracle of Christ in your life?
Wrap Up
Have students write on their Student Guide their miracle story. Explain that everyone that has experienced transformation in Jesus Christ has a miracle story similar to the man of the Gerasenes. Write your miracle story and think about how you might tell people all over town about the miracle.
