Objective
Students will be encouraged to love in actions and not just words.
Warm Up
- Ask students to share how does one show love to another person.
- Ask them to tell what shows them that someone loves them.
- Is it hard to love others sometimes? Why?
- Share your own story about how you show love to your spouse, kids, others. Tangible ways.
Transition
Share with the group that we are all commanded to love one another. Sometimes that is easier said than done. However, we are commanded in scripture to love one another. Let’s watch the video.
Hand out the Student Guides. Encourage the students to watch and listen to the video carefully. Have them write down any words or phrases that catch their attention. Ask them to focus on words or phrases that speak to loving others and why loving one another is essential.
Transition
Ask students to share the words or phrases they have written down. Ask them to explain why those phrases caught their attention. Be prepared to share your list to give them an example.
Bible Study
Say, “As we discussed earlier, love is a common command in scripture. But just because it is a command, loving others will not always be easy. Why is it not always easy to love others?”
- Romans 3:23 – …for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… We all make it difficult at times for others to love us. We are all sinners. But that doesn’t change what Jesus commands.
- John 13:34-35 – A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Jesus says that we should love others because He had first loved us. Also, loving others shows that we belong to Him. It’s an example of our witness.
- 1 John 4:11 – Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Because God loves us, we should then, in turn, love others. Not because they deserve it, but because God said so.
Say, “But what about when others say things that hurt us? How can we love them then?”
- 1 Peter 4:8 – Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
- Proverbs 10:12 – Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.
Say, “Let me share with you a couple of other passages that speak plainly about loving others.”
- John 15:12 – This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
- 1 Corinthians 13:13 – So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
- 1 John 4:7-8 – Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
Say, “One of the best ways that we can show others the love of God is by simply loving them. Again, not because they deserve it. Honestly, we don’t deserve God’s love either. But He loves us anyway, and He loves them too.”
Wrap Up
Say, “We may not always act like it. As the video says, “We don’t always live what we believe.” That is so true. But we can show the love of God to others. Just think – they may be hurting in a way that you don’t know. And we have the opportunity to show love to them. As the video says, “Love loves a hopeless case.” That is so very true. Jesus loves us even when we feel hopeless. Because in His eyes, no one is hopeless. Love is the ultimate force!”
