Objective
Students will discover that they are never alone, especially in their time of doubt and need. God is ever-present and carries them every step of the way.
Warm Up
When your students arrive, have printed out a copy of the famous “Footprints” poem. Have them read it and then highlight, circle, or underline places where God seemed to be far away. At the end, when it explains that God carried the individual, have them write down a time when God carried them even though they may not have realized it.
Transition
After you discuss the poem, ask the question: “What causes us to think that God has abandoned us at times?” Discuss with them the factors that cause us to doubt that God is always there and where those fears come from. Then transition into the song Eternity by Seventh Day Slumber.
Hand out the Student Guides. Explain that this song comes at a timely place in history. With everything going on in the world around us, we may find ourselves drowning in the sea of negativity that gets broadcast nightly. When that happens, we may find the world trying to convince us that God has left us, which causes us to look for hope in the wrong places. As the students watch the video, have them think of ways in which the world is trying to convince them that God has abandoned us. Have them write this in the Screen Savior section.
Transition
Discuss with the students what they wrote on their paper. Ask them what type of “saviors” people are turning to instead of God in today’s world. What has become the god of this generation?
Bible Study
Have the students read through the passages below and answer the questions. They can write their responses in the Never Alone section.
Isaiah 41:1-10
- What promises are made by God in this passage?
- Who ultimately has the power?
- The song mentions seeking false saviors, how do we see this portrayed in verse 7?
- What does God tell His followers at the end of verse 9?
- How does the promise made in verse 10 fit in with the song?
1 Kings 19:1-12
- What did Jezebel tell Elijah she was going to do to him?
- How does Elijah’s reaction feel like the world today, figuratively?
- After Elijah rested, ate, and drank, what did God send in verses 11 and 12?
- Whose whisper did Elijah hear at the end of verse 12?
- Does God always need to do dramatic things to protect or take care of His people?
- What did God demonstrate by whispering?
Wrap Up
Ask the students how they can show others that God is still with us and that He hasn’t abandoned us even during these difficult times. Have them write down their thoughts in the He Carried Me section.
