Will It Magnet? – Find or purchase the most powerful magnet you can. Collect non-metallic and metal-looking objects as well as several different types of metal objects. Show the magnet to your students then starting with the items that are not made of metal, show each item to the students. Have students guess whether or not the item will will be attracted by the magnet. Once you are using the metallic items, be sure to randomly switch between those that will “magnet” and those that will not.

Transition
Ask the students:
  • How did you determine if an item would “magnet” or not?
  • Did any item surprise you by being magnetic? Why or why not?

A magnet creates an invisible area of magnetism all around it called a magnetic field. When an item made from ferromagnetic material enters a magnetic field, the item is drawn towards the magnet.

The Video
Play the video of Newsboys’ Magnetic.

As students watch and listen, have them answer the following questions on their Student Guides:

  • What is the spiritual condition of the person singing the song?
  • How is God’s love like a magnet?

Transition
Ask several students to share their responses and spend some time discussing them.

Bible Study

Read Psalm 139:7-12
This passage tells us that there is no place we can run, hide, drift nor wander to where God is not present. This includes our darkest moments.

  • Have you ever felt that God was far away or you tried to hide from Him?
  • In those dark times, did you hear or feel God calling to you? Drawing you to Himself?
  • How did God reveal Himself to you during that time?

We often go through times in our lives when the presence of God seems far away. Maybe we feel like we haven’t heard from Him, or that He hasn’t answered our prayers, or that we have run so far away from Him that He can’t find us. The Bible is clear that this never the case.

God is omnipresent, which means that He is always everywhere: there is no place He is not present. God is omniscient, which means He always knows everything: there is nothing that is hidden from Him. God is omnipotent, which means He is all powerful: there is no obstacle He can’t overcome. Not only is God omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent, He is Love!

Read Romans 8:37-39

  • According to this passage, what can separate us from God’s love?
  • How has God shown His ultimate love toward us?

Not only is there no place we can run, hide, drift nor wander to where God is not present, but there is nothing you, nor I, nor anyone can do to separate us from God’s love for us as His children. As a follower of Christ, next time you feel God is absent and/or that you have lost His love, remember these simple truths of scripture and trust that He is always there and always loving you.

If you have never accepted Christ as your Savior, your sin separates you from His presense. However, it does not separate you from His love...He has shown His love for you by the sacrifice Jesus paid on the cross for your sins! You, too, can find the ultimate peace knowing you will never be separated from the God who created you and will know His love for you now and through eternity.
