Discussion
Each day is filled with choices. Sometimes we make amazing choices and we want to share with everyone about them. Other times we make choices that lead to regret. Maroon 5’s song “Don’t Wanna Know” talks about a relationship where there is some pain and struggle. The singer seems to be hurting about a lost relationship. There seem to be memories that hurt the singer to remember. When we get close to people, we can share a lot of memories and thoughts and feelings. The singer struggles with the memories of his relationship and seems to turn to alcohol to help, but gets more depressed.
What are some of the things that people can get dependent on in relationships?
Why do you think people struggle with letting go?
Read Proverbs 5:1-14. This passage warns about some of the dangers of immoral relationships. They may start out nice, but they leave a bunch of hurt and pain – and regret. What are some of the negatives mentioned in this passage? What are some things to be avoided? What kinds of relationships should you watch out for?
Read Psalm 32:1-11. This passage talks about some of the guilt and shame that come with sin. What are some of the things that happen when a person refuses to confess their sin? (v 3-4) What are some of the things God promises when sin is confessed? (v. 5-11)
Read Psalm 34:17-19. This is a great passage to hang onto when you are in the middle of heartache. What are some of the things God promises? What does this tell us about God?
Conclusion
Sometimes in relationships, we may make poor decisions that lead to pain and regret. God loves and cares for us even in the midst of that. God wants to heal us and bring us through dark and painful times. Is there a relationship or an activity that is weighing you down and breaking your relationship with God or others? Know that you can ask God for forgiveness. Is there pain or hurt that is tearing you up? Know that God wants to take that from you and give you hope and an amazing future. Ask for help.
