Song: I Dont Need You

Objective
This session will remind students that being self-sufficient is a lonely place. Real life is found in experiencing life with others – their best life is lived in community with other people who are following Jesus.

Warm Up
Human Knot — Have your group break up into teams of 6-8 people. Tell each team to make a circle and grab the hands of one of their teammates across from them. Now, without talking, try and untangle your team without letting go. The first team to complete the task without talking wins. For round two, give the same instructions but now allow the teams to talk as they try and unknot themselves. First team to untangle wins.

Transition
  • What was most difficult about this game?
  • Why was “not talking” so difficult?
  • Why would talking make it even easier to untangle more quickly?
In the video “I Don’t Need You” we hear Andy’s story loneliness and pride. He ultimately realizes that the antidote for those feelings is found in living in community with other people.

Transition
  • Why do we try and “prove” that we don’t need help from others?
  • Share a time when you tried to make it on your own. Why did you think that was the best option?
Bible Study
Ecclesiastes 4:7-12
  • Why should we never live life on our own?
  • What are some of the reasons asking for help can be difficult?
  • Share a time where a friend came to help you out. How did that make you feel?
  • Share a time where you were there for your friend that needed help. How did knowing that you were a good friend make you feel?
Ephesians 4:1-7
  • Paul encourages us to “live a life worthy of the calling” – what calling is he talking about?
  • How do we take what Paul says and apply it to our friendships?
  • Of Paul’s list, what one is easiest for you? Why?
  • Of Paul’s list, what one is most difficult? Why?
  • How would your friendships change if you and your friends fully lived out this list together?
Wrap Up
Supplies: 3x5 cards, markers, and masking tape. Have each student take three or four of the cards and a marker. Ask each student to take a deep breath and pause quietly. After the room is still, ask the students to write down a word on each card that represents the type of friend they want to be. Examples: loving, loyal, giving, always there, forgiving, etc. Have them write down one word in BIG letters on each card. After they have written down the words, find a wall in your youth room to stick them to the wall. To close your time, have the students rotate reading each word, one word at a time. Close your time by encouraging the students that this is the type of youth group we want to be for each other. Close in prayer asking God to always remind us that we are always better together.
