Theme(s): Worship

Objective
Students will be encouraged to trust in God and enter into a life of worship even when life is overwhelming or destructive. Through God, we can overcome the walls, so we worship.

Warm Up
Ask for two volunteers. Explain to them that their goal is to make it from one end of the room to the other. Then reveal the catch: they are to be blindfolded and everyone else in the room will have pool noodles with which they can whack you. Tell them the first person to get to the other side wins. After you blindfold them put other obstacles such as chairs or other furniture in their path. Then instruct them to cross the room. If you wish, you can have a prize to award the person who reaches the other side of the room first.

Transition
Life is often like this race. We think we have it easy and then a whole bunch of obstacles appear in our path and we become unsure of how to make it to our destination without walking away wounded. Often people throw words at us or tear us down or we have to walk through walls in order to get to our destination. This is really hard. This discourages us.

When in relationship with our God, we are encouraged to find joy even amidst these moments. This joy should then lead us to worship as we depend on God when obstacles present themselves. This is what the video “Walls” by Planetshakers emphasizes. Let’s give it a listen.

Invite students to write down the metaphors for challenges they hear in the video or write down obstacles in their own lives that threaten to draw them away from a relationship with God.

Transition
Invite students to share some of what they have written. Then introduce Psalm 13: Today we will look at a poem written by David. Unlike some other psalms written by David, we do not know the exact circumstance that inspired these words. If we consider the life of David, though, we would find a great many times when he faced enemies that could have inspired these feelings. Consider when you have wrestled with similar feelings as you respond to the questions in your Student Guide.

Bible Study
  • The poet begins by asking the Lord “How long?” over and over again. What kinds of emotions are expressed toward God in asking this question? Have you ever felt similar to the poet?
  • What thoughts might the poet be wrestling with? Have you ever wrestled with your thoughts? What was this like?
  • What obstacles appear in the path of the poet as he seeks out God?
  • After declaring this lament, what is the poet’s final response?
  • What makes it so that God’s unfailing love and salvation can bring out the worship expressed in the final verses of the Psalm?
Wrap Up
Students should use the space in their Student Guide to reflect further on the Psalm. They might write specifically how they can continue to praise during a certain circumstance or they might write about the trust and rejoicing that is born out of our experience of God’s unfailing love and salvation. They can reflect in poem or prose. Close in prayer.
