Leader Guide

Artist: Tobymac
Album: The Elements
Label: Capitol Christian Music Group
Song: Scars
From: MVL 102
Writer: Keith Jones | First Baptist Church | Centralia, Missouri

Note:
Toby wrote this song for his son Truett in 2018. Truett entered eternity unexpectedly at age 21 on October 23, 2019. We all – our students included – are in a battle. Each of us has very real scars and our only hope is to lift our head to where our help comes from.

Objective
Students will learn that because we live in a lost and dying world, we will endure scars. While we cannot avoid those scars, we are not alone in the fight. While getting scars are painful, they represent healing- healing that our Lord provides.

Warm Up
Play the Tobymac On “Scars” video. It’s located on MVL102 under the Artist Bible Study Videos Section At the conclusion of the video, describe a scar that you have, tell the story of how you got it, and explain how you grew from that experience. If the students have a scar and want to share (make sure it’s appropriate), allow them to tell the story behind their scars.

Transition
Explain that while wounds heal, the scars remain visible as reminders of the event that took place. Just like real scars, we will experience emotional and spiritual scars that we must also learn from, heal from, but never forget. Ask if the students have a story in their lives that fit this topic.

The Video
Hand out the Student Guides. As Toby explained in the opening video, he wrote this song for his son, Truett. Talk to your students about how parents desperately want to shield their kids from the harmful things of this world, but they are not always successful. God, however, knows exactly the plan for your life and He knows what you need, when you need it, and He will never leave you alone to face your trials. Quite often the storms that we face become a blessing, a lesson, or in many cases, both. As you watch, have the students write down lyrics they relate to in their lives in the section titled Battle Scars. Play the video.

Transition
Have your students reveal the lyrics that related to them the most. Be ready to deal with some tough issues that this conversation may bring up.

Bible Study
Divide the students into groups and give each group a passage. Have them discuss the answers to the questions and write them down. Bring the groups back together and have each group teach that passage. Walk around and offer guidance where needed. Students can write their answers under Not Alone.

Ephesians 6:10-20
This passage in Ephesians is famous for its depiction of spiritual warfare. Have the students focus on applications for their lives as they answer these questions:
  • What do you think Paul means in verse 12?
  • How does each piece of armor protect you from daily attacks on your faith?
  • How can we use this armor better?
  • Why do you think we still get emotional & spiritual scars from the world?
Isaiah 41:10-13
This passage in Isaiah is a reminder to the people of Israel that God is on their side and that He is with them. They do not have to fight their enemies alone.
  • What promises are made in this passage?
  • How does it make you feel when God says that He holds us up with His righteous right hand?
  • Do we believe the promises in this passage or do we just know them? What is the difference?
Psalm 121
This is a passage that Toby references in the song when he says, “Lift your head to where your help comes from.”
  • What are the promises made in this passage?
  • What does lifting our eyes force us to do?
  • How do we know these promises are real?
  • Where in your life has God fulfilled this promise for you?
Wrap Up
Explain that while scars are reminders of traumatic events in our lives, the most important thing that they represent is healing. This healing comes not from this world that wounded us, but from the Great Physician. Finish by praying for your students as they navigate a world that wants to use and abuse them & allow them to pray for each other.
